CANADIAN TO BE OR NOT TO BE?...EDITED!

Two years ago Chris applied for Canadian Citizenship. Although we knew we would eventually get married at the time he still wanted to apply by his own means. Married to a canadian or not, wouldn't have changed a whole lot. With his permanent working visa, he could live here all his life if he wanted but this way he retains his French citizenship but can add a Canadian one to his name AND he will be allowed to vote as a canadian.
Handsome!
Cool part is that after being married to him for 3 years, I too can apply for French citizenship, even without living in France. I will apply for sure, how many ppl get that chance.

He was accepted for the process about a year ago. It was just a matter of recieving more papers indicating when he was to pass the citizenship test.

When we got back from our Honeymoon we sifted through the pile of mail that had accumulated while we were gone. Amongst the envelopes was the Test date! Thursday 17th at 8:30am. Which is TOMORROW!

He has been studying for the past 3 days. He had recieved a book for that reason a yr ago when he was initialy accepted.

I have no doubt that he will pass...(no pressure right) lol...I will let u know. I sure hope they let him and others know the same day and not let ppl wait needlessly for nothing.

When it's all said and done...our 2 votes will be better then one in the future. We are very similar in our political beliefs so it will be cool to vote together.

If you could have dual citizenship..what would it be? and why?

JUST IN.....It is now noon Thursday 17th Aug....he just finished..YES IT WAS A LONG WAIT FOR HIS CALL!
HE PASSED WITH FLYING COLOURS! WHOOO HOOO CHRIS IS NOW CANADIAN!!! and French ofcourse but now HE CAN VOTE!!

They actually write the test..(he got everything right) Like I didn't already know that sheesh....then they correct the test then wait till it's done for everyone else.
They were 62 ppl from 31 different countries....that's pretty incredible..he was amazed himself.
After all the preliminaries, they actually do the whole ceremony then and there. They are sworn in by a judge as Canadians and sing the National Anthem and get their certificates all in the same day as the test. So IT'S DONE!...
He can apply for his Canadian passport now aswell. I have to get mine too lol.

HOW COOL IS THAT EH?!

My kids have dual Sweden/USA, but I am STILL unsure if I can. I remember some threatening language on a U.S. Embassy document saying something to the effect of taking a foreign oath could forfeit your American rights and protections...blah, blah! Ever since then I've been scared to death! LOL!! Good luck, Chris! You can do it!

I believe you're right gina, U.S. citizens have to choose..if they want another citizenship, they have to negate their U.S. citizenship..the exceptions are like for your children who have parents of both countries etc...I am thankful that Canada doesn't have a prob with ppl wanting dual citizenship like many other countries.

Wow, great news. I'm sure he'll pass with flying colors since he's prepared a bit.

EU as a second citizenship would be fun.

Over two years ago I looked into gaining "official" British citizenship. I got all the forms, but as of yet have done nothing with them. I need to get moving! lol.

Félicitations Chris!!

I think I already told you but I'm not sure... Ry has dual citizenship Can/USA and because of that he can apply for the littlest midget to get his US citizenship as well...

Me on the other hand I would love to have a EU citizenship as well as Canadian... I have a friend that says it has opened so many doors for him...

Michele sent me to the Moon! Or to a Moonbeam, perhaps.

Congratulations are going out to Chris on his accomplishment. Both the new citizenship and also your relatively new marriage. Keep up the good work!

As for your question, I'd pick Denmark since that's my cultural background. My Dad was born there but emigrated to the USA with his parents when he was a kid.

Congratulations!! Hmm, if you both have to get passports now, in honor of occasion, then I guess that means you'll have to plan another trip so that you can use your new passports, right? ;)

What do they ask for Canadian citizenship? The line up of the last (1967) cup winning Maple Leafs team? Sing the chorus of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"? Identify at least 12 varieties of Timmy Ho's doughnuts? Recite biographical data on Celine Dion, like at which point she started to get jiggy with Rene? (18... yeah, right).

If he was able to do any of those, RIGHT ON! Slap a maple leaf on his ass!

In other words, congratulations.

(My sister married a Canadian and lives in Thorold, ON. I think she's still having a bit of problems with the Lightfoot song.)

Bess...You are so right lol. We had already planned to go to France next yr if possible. Although, he would ofcourse use his french passport but I havent gotten a passport yet so we are going to apply for mine and his new canadian one this yr together. I look forward to being able to apply for a French citizenship after being married to him 3 yrs...Two are better then one in my book lol..

As a EU citizen, I can say EU citizenship comes in useful.

You can holiday nearly anywhere in Europe without a visa :)
